Navassa Island DXpedition 2015
We are excited to be part of the Navassa Island DXpedition 2015. The team will be using the new Pro 7 headset during this demanding challenge. Navassa Island is in a remote area of the Caribbean Ocean and its recorded history goes back to Christopher Columbus who landed there in 1504. The lighthouse on the island, which will be the base of operations, also has a big history. Built in 1917 by the US Lighthouse Service, it has served through the Panama Canal era as well as being used in World War II by the US Navy.
The Navassa Island DXpedition 2015 is, by any standard, a huge undertaking. All of the gear had to be loaded into 55-gallon drums, loaded onto helicopters and flown to the island. And that was just the beginning! It is, as Bob Heil says, “the mother load.” You can follow the team and its progress by clicking here.
Boomsets for DX-pedition
Combination Boom Mics with Headsets are the choice of DX-pedition operators, as well as many who operate from home. The reason? They keep the operating desk uncluttered, and the microphone does not obscure the operator’s view of the logging computer display that is undoubtedly in front of him or her. The following headsets are our recommendations for DXpeditions. They all come in dynamic or iC versions and feature the exclusive Heil Phase Reversal feature allows the user to move the signal acoustically, which creates a spatial widening of the sound field that makes it easier to ‘see’ a signal inside a pileup while removing listener fatigue during prolonged use.
The Pro 7 has a rugged design and 2″ thick gel foam ear pads that provide comfort for extended periods of time while exhibiting passive noise reduction rated at -26dB, ideal for use in high ambient noise environments. The Pro 7 has an interchangeable microphone system, which allows the microphone element to be easily changed in the field for different types of applications.
The Pro Set features a large earmuff-type earpiece cover, which provides plenty of outside sound rejection and features the Heil-exclusive Phase Reversal Switch that creates a unique spatial perception to the incoming signals in a pile-up making them easier to separate.
The Pro Set Elite has been designed for amateur radio operators and uses the newly designed Heil HC 6 wide response microphone element. The new technology of the Heil HC 6 is designed for full range audio or can be adjusted (with radio adjustment) for bright, articulate audio to cut through amateur radio noise and signal pileups.
All the above Boomsets require an AD-1-n Adapter Cable for interfacing to your transceiver. See the adapter selector for adapter compatibility.
Desk Microphones for DX Work
The many benefits of the Heil Sound HC-4 DX Dream Machine mic element may also be realized in our extensive line of base station microphones.
The Handi Mic 4 is a 4 inch tall hand mic with a PTT switch on the microphone. It can also be mounted in a base station environment.
All the above desk mics require a CC-1-n Adapter Cable for interfacing to your transceiver. See the product compatibility charts for details.
A coiled version of the CC-1 adapter cable is available for a few models. These cables are the CH-1-i8/iM/K8/KM/Y8/YM.
Desk Mics for Icom Rigs
All the above desk microphones will work very well with the latest generation of Icom high-end transceivers, including the IC-746 Pro, IC-756 (all Pro versions), and the IC-7800. These Icom rigs have sufficient mic amp gain to accommodate the dynamic HC-4 element, especially when the compression systems are engaged (not much compression is required).
For more information on iCOM mics for DX check out the All Things iCOM page.
